The first meal of the day is breakfast and the secret to high concentration is to skip it.
I can see your looks disgust from here. Skip breakfast? The all time most important meal of the day. Did grandma advocate the benefits of eating a filling breakfast?
Forget what people say for a while and start judging things by the way you feel because that's where the proof lies. From your own experience do you feel extremely energetic after your morning dose of breakfast? Or do you feel sluggish with a need for a coffee to get you through the morning?
Digestion consumes more energy in your body than any other process, even more than most physical labor. The less work of digestion you give, the more energy you have for other things.
90% of our energy is consumed in digestion if you look at the statistics below
Morning: Get up at around 8 and have a heavy breakfast of cooked food. Digestion takes 3-5 hours depending on whether its vegetarian or non-vegetarian.
Noon: Heavy lunch. Digestion takes 3-5 hours depending on whether its vegetarian or non-vegetarian. Non-vegetarian food takes 5 hours
Evening: A junk food snack. Digestion would takes 3-5 hours
Night: A heavy dinner. Digestion would take another 3-5 hours.
The whole day and night, your body is digesting food. Where is the break?
Moreover eating food in an rashly combined manner, for example steak with baked potatoes and beer, would ensure that digestion takes 8 hours or more.
Meat is acidic, baked potatoes is alkaline. The combination would cause acidic juice (used to digest meat) to mix with alkaline juice (used to digest potatoes). They neutralize each other, I am sure would have learnt that in your chemistry class. Alkalines neutralize acids. So digestion would go on forever and finally the stinking, putrefied, rotten food is just pushed out of the stomach
You will be astonished at the improvement in your concentration. Your productivity will be soaring high, your mind will be extremely active. The reason is that by following the steps above you have more energy available for concentration. Previously this energy was taken up by digestion.
Remember how difficult it is for you to concentrate on a subject when you are feeling sleepy or tired. The same subject is easy to concentrate on in the morning after a good night's sleep. Do you why this happens?
Your energy levels are at the highest in the morning, after a good night's sleep. This is the only part of the day when you will be productive at your highest capacities. Your nerves are in a good condition, toxins have been removed, your cells rejuvenated and your brain rested. You can accomplish any task with high concentration.
As the day progresses your energy levels start declining. Most of it is due to food digestion, almost 90% of your energy is wasted by food digestion. Towards night you are sure to feel sluggish and each work would requires 10 times the effort.
It is counter productive to work late into the night because you are working when your energy levels have fallen way below your best. You are mostly working on reserve energy and by drinking coffee you are just artificially stimulating your nerves. You will pay dearly for it the next day when you get up all drugged.
So work in the morning, skip breakfast and allow your stomach some rest. Eating fruits in the morning is okay because fruits are not digested by the stomach, it is directly sent to the intestines.
Finish the jobs, which require the highest levels of concentration, in the morning. Keep the less important work for the evening. Work continuous till noon and finish all your work. 4 hours of rigorous, high concentration, work is enough for most. This way you will have lot of free time in the evenings for leisure. Go ahead and feel the energy.
